1774. The revolution brewing in the American colonies is set to erupt in violent conflict. In Hopewell, near Trenton, New Jersey, the nearly lifeless body of an orphan girl is pulled from the Delaware River by a son of John Hart, a man whose passion for independence has brought down the wrath of the British Crown and its many local sympathize.

Thus begins an epic two-part saga in which the Harts become pivotal players in the cause of freedom, pitted against a powerful enemy alongside George Washington, Ben Franklin, and other patriots from throughout the colonies. John Hart becomes a hunted man, and young Edward Hart deeply inspired by the writings of Thomas Paine falls in love, enlists in Washington s ragtag army, and suffers tragic losses on and off the battlefield before victory at Trenton changes his life and alters the course of history.

In the explosive second part, modern day Trenton comes into vivid focus as Luis Alma son of Cuban immigrants, hero, and reluctant candidate for mayor struggles to hold his family together. Against a backdrop of crime, corruption, and murder, a mystery unfolds linking the Alma family to the Harts of Hopewell, and a young man from the wrong side of the tracks discovers that the key to Trenton s future may lie in a secret from its past.

As a historian, reenactor and musician of the Trenton area. I recognized places and people (including my college history professor!) in this book and enjoyed it tremendously. Clearly the authors did their research and drew on their own memories and experiences of the area. Bravo, gentlemen! My only negative comment is regarding the sexually explicit "scenes" in a few parts of the book. They seemed to me to be unnecessary and while they don't offend me in any shape or form, they do hamstring this book into being something that local school libraries will not likely carry. I feel that the authors missed a golden opportunity to present Trenton-themed history and memories to a whole new generation of area kids for the sake of adding just one or two racy passages that really didn't seem to match the rest of the books overall feel. If I could make a wish for a moment, it would be for a cleaned-up school edition of this book that could go into local school libraries. The manor in which this book was written works well for teens and/or adults - perfect for that setting. Criticism aside, nice work, authors.

interesting
Great read! For New Jersey natives especially, but all American Revolution history buffs will love this book. Pivotal events of the revolution occured right in my backyard and it was exciting to read about them, knowing I had visitied those very same locations! Calu and Hart are exceptional character developers, the feelings of anger and the desire to cry out for justice on behalf of the modern characters is irresistable! Perhaps Trenton is on the verge of another revolution but of a very different kind.....
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and got to a point where I couldn't put it down. The book is very personal to me as a resident of the city, but it's a story that's all too familiar to those throughout the country as well. I loved how the story lines and different aspects of times in history were intertwined. The story was told vividly and I found it funny how I can see real people of today inside those characters. I only wish we had a Luis Alma that we can turn to today. Great job on a well written book. I wish more people can realize that the fate of our future truly lies in learning about our past.
In Trenton, A Novel, the brilliance of connecting a fictitious modern storyline to true historical events kept me captivated. With Calu and Hart's book, I enjoyed the fast-paced read, the twists and turns, and revisiting a bit of US history I somehow pushed to the side in my reading tastes. I enjoy historically-based literature from all nations and this one hit the mark for me, and so close to home too. The primarily factual storyline, involving the city of Trenton, NJ, it's characters whether real or imaginary, have inspired me, as a Central Ohioan, to further investigate our own historical stories that have a rich heritage of sacrifice and determination including colonists and Indian tribes that lived on the prairies that once existed here. I wonder what they're ancestors are up to now....hopefully not similar nasty antics portrayed in the Calu and Hart novel! Cudo's to both authors for a page-turner.
this was hard to read because of the writing...i am not a fan of these two authors...i love to read about history but this was not a favorite of mine
