I honestly I thought I was going to get a informational book or more factual information, but to be honest I was just really annoying cause all the author was talking about was his dog and amazing she is which is fine but after a while the author was just hyping his dog to much. You will understand by the time you get to the middle of the book. All the author was mostly talking about was everyday experiences with her dog. There was some factual information about dogs but probably it takes up 30% of the book.

What a Dog For? The Surprising History Science Philosophy and Politics of Man Best Friend John Homans 9781594205156 Books Reviews

Very interesting and well written. A few parts hard to read (overpopulation, dog's short life). Still, I loved it. Have read it twice.
After The Inside of a Dog, I decided I needed to know more from another angle. I now more clearly understand Ms. Mollie and what she smells (most important), sees and hears and--most importantly--KNOWS!
Lots of stuff for any dog lover to ponder--again and again. I plan to re-read the book. I especially liked the section on Labrador retrievers since one walked into our lives just before last Christmas. (His mother, we learned, is a Border Collie and the combination of an immature Lab and a over-smart Border Collie has made the experience, well, interesting and not without cost.

But, this is a fine book--and well-written to boot!
Homan does bring up some strong science on the origin of dogs and the origin of their relation to mankind. His comments on training are sound. He does a good job in differentiating dogs and wolves. He quite correctly castigates the AKC for encouaging the development of nferior animals. He blasts the puppy mills. Some of his philosophy is based on conjecture more than science. A good read. I read it on ininterconitental flight.
Those of us who grew up around dogs or have dogs attribute all sorts of human-like characteristics to them. Homans tracks that anthropomorphic perception from long before Darwin's own penchant and gives us some pretty amazing statistics that track their domestication from many thousands of years ago to the latest trends in developing new cross-breeds. It was particularly interesting to find the tension between kennel clubs and animal rescue organizations. Sometimes the writing seemed to be overly pedantic, but the book is well written and displays the author's own affection for his Labrador mix.
This a good and interesting book if you're a 'dog person'. It's a book that tries, successfully, in my opinion, to clarify scientific studing that are finally looking at the history of the dog, exploring the reasons for domestication, differentiating the dog from the wolf. If you want a book about training or about cute dog stories (Marley and Me), this is not the book for you. But if you're genuinely interested in what makes a dog tick and the various reasons why dogs 'came in from the cold', told in clear, easy prose. by all means read it. I've been in dogs for 40 years and I learned a lot.
Thought provoking look at the Modern Dog where it came from, how we treat it, and -- though the question is never really answered -- what it is for. Mr. Homans has a lot of material on the newly emerging subsector of animal behavior studies that focusses on dogs. He also has an enlightening -- and disturbing -- section on the background of most modern dog breeds. This is much less in the mists of the deep past than many dog owners like to think, and much more in the breeding programs of Victorian dog fanciers. Then, he proceeds to discuss the change in attitudes towards dog rescue and in the practices of dog rescue much progress has been made, but much is still needed. All in all, a worthwhile book, though those who love a certain breed of dog (like me) may find it distressing. Lab devotees will be an exception -- he has a lot in here on the source and virtues of the Lab.
