For me this was a quick read. As soon as I started reading it was hard for me to put down. Samantha is a normal teen or at least she thought she was. When her father dies a whole new world opens up for Samantha those close to her guard a secret that there is huge shock there when Samantha finds out.Samantha learns that she will be able to balance both the light and the darkness but it seems that she has to learn to control her emotions. You can tell Samantha is a teenager because she is in that teenage crush age. She loves her best friend Lucas but has also fallen for his brother Ethan. Though Ethan can not act on his feelings because of certain rules.
Though out the book we see how Samantha tries to come to terms with this new life of hers though it seems to come at a cost.
On top of trying to get all this figured out she learns that there is an Exiled who wants to kill her. Sebastian will stop at nothing to get to Samantha even if that means hurting those close to her. It will be a battle that Samantha has to pick which side to be on and it won't be easy.
Now I would normally give this book five stars but there were so many grammar issues that I had to drop my rating down!

There is no good way to tell your best friend that her father was a fallen angel and that she is descended from dark and light. She will have to choose a side and hopefully it will be the right choice. Talk about pressure, since her fathers death Sam's life has been spinning out of control. Dark visions, voices in her head that terrify and confuse her though dreaming about her dad makes her feel close to him still but the fear in his voice is almost palpable. Something is coming for her and she needs to be ready to fight although Sam has no real understanding of who or what that is. She has two protectors to watch over her, Lucas a childhood friend who Sam had a crush on when she was younger and then there is Ethan. He is her friend, her biggest fan and someone she trusts to keep her safe. He seems to be able to know how she is feeling and is always there to offer a shoulder to cry on which is often lately. Distracted by her growing attraction to Ethan, secrets are revealed that could hinder their affection for each other if they act on it. Torn between two brothers, one is her salvation and the other could be sacrificed if she makes the wrong decision. Her brain is on overload, feeling pressured and insecure, Sam is struggling to control her gifts or her mounting feelings that threaten to overshadow her soul and destroy everything. The Faithful seem convinced that Sam has already chosen a side as she has begun her transformation and it is only a matter of time before she succumbs. Sometimes it is not about who you are but it is what you do that defines you, the choices you make and how you live. Her father told her she will lose before she succeeds and she would be betrayed but by who? Darkness or light, redemption or retribution, love and hate, sometimes the lines get blurred. In life there needs to be a balance and the hard part is knowing where to draw the line. Whilst I did find this book really entertaining I was a little disappointed in the ending and thought it anticlimactic. The story built up for this final battle and for me it was over far too easily. All that aside I will be buying the next book as I found Sam likeable and engaging.
I love reading books about angels, and this book was no exception. This is definitely a series I can get into, and I hope to read the next installment soon.
The characters in this book are very well developed and really fun to read about. I felt that the prophecies in the dreams made it a little more predictable, but at the same time, I can see why it was written the way it was. Sam is a sweet girl, and she's being faced with difficult decisions that I couldn't even fathom worrying about. At such a young age, I am very impressed by the nobility of her actions, and felt that she was a great lead for this book.
The only problem that I had with this book was the beginning. I found it a little confusing and jumpy at first. There was so much going on, but so little explanation that I felt as if I might have missed a prequel. I'm really glad I stuck it out though, because it really does explain everything in the end. Don't give up, or you'll be missing out on a great saga.
If you're into paranormal books involving angels, or really any paranormal, this is a great book to add to your shelves.
Note I bought this book from as it's first edition, not sure why it's saying I've not purchased it, but perhaps from the cover and edition change it doesn't show that.
Torn begins the tale of Samantha English, a teenage girl thrust into a sea of secrets upon her father's demise. What she once knew as truth is no longer, replaced by a destiny she never knew she had. Her days as a high school senior are now spent training alongside Lucas and Ethan, her best friends and mentors, as she prepares to choose her fate. Her path is tough and her hardships plenty, but she must find a balance in good and evil, right and wrong, and light and darkness before it is too late.
There were a few spelling and grammar mistakes as well as some confusion about character identities, but aside from those few issues, the story built at a steady pace and fulfilled most, if not all, of the questions asked throughout.
I would recommend Torn to mature teens and adults that enjoy young adult, paranormal romance, and fantasy novels. There are some adult themes, violent situations, and language concerns for readers under fourteen.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Though seemingly sluggish at first, the story was intense and gripping. Samantha's struggles gave her an air of realism that many authors forget in stories of this genre and made her much easier to relate to than most heroines in the young adult genre today. Torn, while about angels and demons was easily one of the most unique takes on the entire idea that I have read in a long, long time and I honestly look forward to reading the second book in this refreshing series. I am giving Torn 4.5 stars for a solid story marred by the mistakes mentioned above.
